Daniel Cuevas-

I'm nine years old, the youngest, and we're passing a bottle around, a bottle I've stolen from a grocery store nearby. (Brown, 4)

The author James Brown included this quote because he wanted to give us some insight into his past life. He was trying to portray his life as one that is not fancy and filled with rainbows and sunshine, but a life filled with mistakes, hardships and obstacles. I wonder if the author was forced to steal the bottle from the grocery store nearby. Maybe he had had bad role models that have done it before, which caused him to believe it was okay, because at nine years old it is not okay to be drinking, let alone stealing form the grocery store. This reminds me of one of my cousins that started hanging out with the wrong crowd and because of their influence he got hooked on drugs and his life went downhill. Also, I also wonder if most of his family was a bad influence towards him. Perhaps later in the novel there may be someone that came into his life that changed it for the better. I predict that James Browns life was filled with a lot of drugs and substances that are not good for you. Moreover, I wonder whats the story behind writing this book. I guess I will just need to keep reading wont I?
